Blue Green Algae – Upper Rideau Lake – Health Unit Notice
August 12th 15:30 – Please be advised that the Township has received notice from the Health Unit regarding a letter that has been sent to some residents of Upper Rideau Lake in the McNally’s Bay area regarding blue-green algae. UPDATE # 1 - August 13th 11:00 - The Health Unit has advised the Township that staff will be in the potentially impacted areas (McNally's Bay and Narrows Lock area) today to deliver the information provided in yesterday's notice (see above) to residences, campgrounds and lock stations. As noted by the Health Unit these are precautionary measures until the samples taken by the Ministry are analyzed and the results available. No specific timeline has been provided for this. Questions should continue to be directed to the Health Unit at 613 283 2740 or the Ministry of the Environment at 1 800 565 4923.
UPDATE # 2 - August 13th 16:30 – The Ministry of the Environment has advised the Health Unit regarding the results of the samples collected on August 11th:
“McNally’s Bay South End sample (LIMS#C213848-01) obtained August 11, 2014 has total Microcystins present in the sample. The sample obtained has a total Microcystins concentration of 1.59 ug/L. The Ontario Drinking Water Quality Standard for Total Microcystins is 1.5 ug/L. Health Canada’s Interim Guideline for recreational exposure is 20 ug/L. The sample obtained therefore confirms that Blue Green Algae is present at concentrations slightly greater than the Ontario drinking water standard and well below the Health Canada Interim Guideline for recreational exposure. This sample contained Gloeotrichia which is a non-toxic Blue Green and Anabaena which is a Blue Green that may produce microcystin. The sample from the Newport Village Beach (C213848-02) obtained on August 11, 2014 did not have Microcystins present in the sample.”
Township staff have been in contact with the Health Unit. The Health Unit has advised that they will be evaluating the results as supplied and coordinating a response tomorrow morning. Residents of McNally’s Bay should continue to follow the precautionary measures outlined in the Health Unit’s letter of August 12 (see above). UPDATE # 3 - August 14th 12:30 - The Health Unit has issued a media release following on the MOE test results (see UPDATE # 2 above). The release can be read here: letter from the Health Unit (PDF). As indicated the advisory of the 12th remains in place for McNally's Bay. MOE sampling continues and sightings should be reported to the MOE through the Spills Action Centre. UPDATE # 9 - August 28th 14:30 - The Ministry of the Environment and Climate
Change has provided the results from the sampling of Upper Rideau Lake on Friday
the 22nd. Of the 11 sites sampled for microcystins, 2 were positive. The
positive sites included Little Bay on the North Shore at 0.10 µg/L, and
McNallys Bay at 0.26 µg/L. Both positive samples were below the Ontario
Drinking Water Quality Standard for microcystins of 1.5 µg/L. The Health Unit has issued the following update following on receipt of the
