Contacting the OPP in Rideau Lakes Township can be done by phoning the office directly at 613-283-6911, going through OPP Dispatch at 1-888-310-1122, or in an emergency situation dialing "911".

2007 Leeds County OPP Business Plan

The OPP has been producing annual business plans at the detachment level since 1998. This level of accountability to our communities has resulted in more focused delivery of service. Our efforts in these areas will not cease as we continuously review the ways in which we do our business seeking better efficiency and effectiveness. I am pleased to report that policing services in the Township are handled under contract with the Ontario Provincial Police. The OPP have a proud history of policing the area which stems back to the actual origins of policing in the province.

Rideau Lakes OPP detachment is located at 441 Highway 15, Smiths Falls, in the Old South Elmsley Municipal Building. To meet the needs of the citizens, the township has funded 11 uniformed police officer positions which include 8 patrol officers, a detective constable, a court officer/community services officer, and a community sergeant. A full time secretary is also available to answer the phone and perform administrative tasks.

Rideau Lakes is not a stand alone detachment. We form part of a larger Host Detachment - Leeds. Resources are shared, thus providing 365 day per year, 24-hour coverage.

From time to time events in the township require more complex resources. Emergency Response Team (ERT), Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU), Helicopter, Canine, Identification Unit and Polygraph, to name a few, are readily available if needed.

Community policing is the philosophy under which all policing services in Rideau Lakes Township is delivered. We have a very active Community Policing Volunteer Committee. The committee assists in the identification of public safety issues, implementing strategies for problem-solving and prevention/reducing crime in the communities. They provide training for the volunteers and attend various community events to make information available. Their most recent project was to staff the OPP Detachment on Fridays during the summer months from 4 - 8 p.m. This pilot project was both beneficial for both public and volunteers alike. Plans are underway to continue this on an annual basis.

The Victim Services Unit (VSU) operates under the Community Policing Volunteer Services of North Leeds and attends at the request of a victim when relayed by an OPP officer. Support is provided in the short term to meet the immediate needs of the victim (abuse, family crisis, death notification, suicide, robbery, etc). Longer term support is generally provided by referral to the appropriate agencies.

Rideau Lakes Township is a wonderful place to live and work. All members of the Detachment are very committed to ensuring that our citizens are safe and secure in their pursuit and enjoyment of all lawful activities.

Civic Addressing
Every residence and/or business in the township has been assigned a "9-1-1" emergency civic address number. These numbers in addition to aiding in emergency response, are also useful in helping others find you. Unfortunately not all residents in the township have taken advantage of this. Signs are available from the township - for information please see the 911 Addressing page.

REMEMBER - If we can't find you - we can't help you!

Cell Phones and 911
When using 911 for an emergency call, please be sure to use a land-based telephone whenever possible. The 911 system can only identify your exact calling location from land-based phones. Cell phone 911 calls are routed directly to the OPP and not to the 911 call centre.

However, if you need to use a cell phone for an emergency call, please be sure to stay on the line as long as you can to ensure that the details of your location and the emergency are clear to the operator.

Cell phones, because of their portability, do not have a connection to 911 call centres. If you have a choice, please use land based phones for 911 calls whenever possible.
