Recycling

REDUCE * REUSE * RECYCLE


THERE IS A WEEKLY LIMIT OF 5 RECYCLING BAGS, MAXIMUM WEIGHT PER BAG IS 40 LBS

NO BAG TAGS REQUIRED

Recycling material is now being collected on alternating weeks. This means plastic/metal recyclables will be collected one week, while all fibres (cardboard, newspaper, boxboard) will be collected the next week. Collection alternates weeks throughout the entire year, so please use the calendar for easy reference.

RECYCLING PRODUCTS:

THE PLASTIC, METAL, and GLASS BOTTLES & JARS RECYCLING BLUE BAG (see the PDF)
 

Cans should be crushed and plastics should be flattened when possible.

All containers must be CLEAN with no food debris.


CLEAN PLASTIC # 1-7 including but not limited to:

  • Water/pop/juice bottles
  • Butter/margarine/yogurt tubs
  • Plastic egg cartons (Styrofoam ones are garbage)
  • Plastic Bottles (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, ibuprofen, lotion, liquid soap, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, salad dressing, peanut butter, glass cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, dish soap, laundry soap, disinfectant wipes, etc.)
  • Plastic hinged, clamshell/deli style containers (fruit, baked goods, take out trays, etc.)
  • Milk/juice/soup cartons
  • Plastic bags with a number on them #1 - #7 (grocery, wood pellet, water softener)
  • Tetra packs/drink boxes, foil drink pouches
  • Plastic flower pots & trays with a number on them (#1 - #7)

If it doesn’t have a recycling number on it, it is garbage.

Styrofoam is garbage.

CLEAN METAL & ALUMINUM including but not limited to:

  • Clean aluminum food trays (pie plates, take out, etc.)
  • Clean aluminum foil (no food debris)
  • Clean metal & aluminum cans (soup, pasta, vegetable, canned meat, soft drink, energy drink, pet food, etc.)

GLASS BOTTLES & JARS ONLY including but not limited to:  (remove lids and place in same bag) pickles, beets, relish, cheeze whiz, salsa, olives, sauces, spices, jam, etc.
 

Window panes are not recyclable due to the coating on the glass.

 


THE PAPER/FIBRE RECYCLING BLUE BAG (see the PDF)
 

You may bundle and tightly tie your cardboard and paper if desired (no bag required).

 

Heavily waxed or coated boxes are not accepted as recycling - they are garbage.

Remove the inner plastic bags/liners in cereal and cracker boxes and put them in your garbage bag.

 

All cardboard boxes must be flattened.


PAPER/FIBRE including but not limited to:

  • Newspapers, flyers
  • Magazines & catalogues
  • Telephone books, directories
  • Clean ice cream cardboard containers
  • Paper towel & toilet paper tubes
  • Cardboard egg cartons (Styrofoam ones are garbage)
  • Corrugated cardboard (flatten)
  • Boxboard boxes (cereal, crackers, cake mixes, granola bars, tissue, pasta, potato, oatmeal, toothpaste, chocolate & candy boxes (Smarties, outer gum packages, Nerds, Pot of Gold Chocolate boxes, etc.)
  • Clean fast food containers (McDonald’s burger boxes, Tim Hortons cups, french fries container, etc.)
  • Soft covered books (novels, puzzle, dictionaries, etc.)
  • Hard covered books (covers removed)
  • Envelopes & junk mail
  • Printer/copier paper


GARBAGE - CLEAR BAG (see the PDF)

GARBAGE Items including but not limited to:
  • Food
  • Film wrap, waxed paper & Ziploc bags
  • Aerosol cans – completely empty (cooking spray, mousse, hair spray, shaving cream, cleaning spray, etc.)
  • Food wrappers/packages (cheese, pasta, cookie, bread, etc.)
  • Candy wrappers (chocolate bars, candy, gum, etc.)
  • Cardboard tubes & canisters with metal trim/bottoms (frozen juice, potato chip, hot chocolate, coffee, etc.)
  • Seasoning packets (gravy, taco, sauce mixes, etc.)
  • Incandescent light bulbs (florescent bulbs are hazardous waste)
  • Drinking glasses, ceramics, mugs, dishes, cookware/bakeware
  • Small appliances (coffee maker, can opener, etc.)
  • CD/DVD/VHS/Video Games & all cases
  • Small oil jugs (completely empty)
  • Wrapping paper, shiny gift bags, bows, ribbon, bubble wrap & cellophane wrap
  • Toothpaste tubes


COMPOST - BACKYARD COMPOSTER

  • Food scraps including fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grinds, breads, egg shells, tea bags, etc.
  • NO meat, bones, oils, etc.

  • Fluorescent bulbs
  • Used oil/gas
  • Paint, paint cans
  • Aerosol cans
  • Cleaning products (i.e. javex, bleach, etc.)
  • Batteries

Eyeglasses Recycling

The Township of Rideau Lakes is partnering with the Elgin Lions Club and Westport Lions Club to recycle your old eyeglasses to provide recycled eyewear free of charge to people in developing countries. For more info see the Eyeglasses Recycling Page.

PITCH-IN Week

Participate in Rideau Lakes PITCH-IN Week: April 16-29, 2017 and keep your Township looking great.  PITCH-IN bags are free to volunteers and can be obtained at the Township Office and Libraries.  Pick up roadside litter, place it in a PITCH-IN bag and set it out for free collection on your regular day (no bag tag required).  Contact Amy for more information 1-800-928-2250 X285 aschur@twprideaulakes.on.ca

Rideau Lakes introduced the PITCH-IN program in 2000, and from there it has grown into an annual event, township-wide!  Organize a group, plan a barbeque and make a day of it in your community or village on SATURDAY, APRIL 29 – PITCH-IN Day.  Bags, free disposal and prizes are available! Contact the Township office and register your event.
